Never did I imagine the world which we are living in. I’ve always liked watching post-apocalyptic type of shows and movies. I’ve been fascinated learning about The Great Depression and have read many, many historical fiction books that talk about war rations and other events that I haven’t lived through…and which never thought I’d live to see. I remember my grandma saving everything…and I mean everything! We are talking about every magazine and newspaper she’d ever owned; empty perfume bottles and those plastic to-go containers that you fill with salsa at restaurants (turns out those make great storage for jewelry!!)
Not that our situation is as drastic as The Great Depression…at least not yet; I sure hope it won’t be. Still, it feels sometimes like we are running short on some resources and rationing the ones we have. Our church is really big on teaching personal preparedness, so my whole life I have been taught about how to build a food storage and supplies for household items in the event of a natural disaster or other economic hardships. When crap hit the fan (‘scuse my language), I didn’t feel a panic like a lot of people did and I didn’t have to start hoarding resources. We have room for improvement for sure; this has been a valuable lesson in preparedness to see where we are weak; ummm…can we say toilet paper?! Who would’ve thought? Luckily we haven’t run out yet and we are starting to see it back on shelves, but we definitely didn’t have as much tp, and some other feminine/toiletry items, as we would feel comfortable with.
As for fabric…well, let’s just say that my fabric hoarding is paying off right about now! Sewists have been hit hard by the shortages. Thankfully, with all the mask-making going on, fabric stores are considered essential and not completely closed. Unfortunately, also because of mask-making, fabric is getting harder and harder to come by. I went to Wal-mart for our weekly shopping haul and the fabric shelves were completely bare!! Joann’s always has a line out the door to get in and their selection is going down as well. The Joann’s that offers curbside pick-up near us is taking a few days to fill the orders (and almost as long to sift through the fabrics on their website to find something that is actually in stock!!)
I’ve had a few people reach out to me to ask me where to get fabric in times like these. I have some online shops that I wanted to share with you today, but also another suggestion; aside from your typical chain stores like Wal-mart or Joann, try to googling nearby quilt shops. We have a few in our surrounding area and a quick google search will bring them right up for you. I know of a couple that are closed, but some are still open. They pretty much only carry cottons at quilting stores, but if you are mask-making, that’s exactly what you want. Many of these quilt shops are independently owned as well, so you would be supporting a small business which I think is big win in times like these! So, check out those quilt shops.
You can also try Etsy shops. They are also independently run by small business owners (many at-home entrepreneurs), but they usually are a little pricier to account for Etsy fees.
If you can’t find any local shops, or are too afraid to venture out, then check online.
Here are some online fabric shops that I’ve come across, either through social media or otherwise. Some of them I have ordered from and some of them I haven’t. You can do your own research, but I’m just putting the information out there of where you can buy online!
- Minerva fabrics- I am a blogger for them and I LOVE everything I’ve gotten from them! They carry high quality fabrics for a good price and they have a large variety of different fabrics and I know for sure that they are still open. They are located in the UK, but they do ship to the US.
- Fabric.com– I personally haven’t shopped here, but I have family members who have and love their fabrics.
- Califabrics.com- I have ordered from here a few times and have been pleased each time. Their prices are great and they have a good selection of both knits and wovens!
- So Sew English Fabrics– They have a really great variety of knits, but have some wovens as well. I’ve also shopped with them and been happy with my fabric!
- Knit Fabrics .com– This shop has a huge variety of knits, including swimwear fabric! I haven’t shopped here yet, but plan to in the future!
- Marcy Tilton Fabrics– a great variety of cottons, stretch knits, special occasion, and more!
- Mood Fabrics– you have probably seen them on Project Runway! They have a great variety of fabrics.
- Fabrics-Store.com- they mainly sell linen, but if you need linen, this is the best place for it!
- Beautiful Quilt Fabric– they have a huge variety of quilting fabrics, including many religious prints.

Do you have a favorite online fabric shop that you’d like to share? If so, please leave me a comment. I love finding new places to shop and I’d love to build a larger list!
Fabric Depot looked so promising a week and a half ago. They had a ton of fabric in stock when I ordered. (18 yards ordered). My order is still “processing” I placed the order on April 11th, it’s now April 21st.
This covid life has everything delayed. I can’t even get a hold of them. They don’t have anyone working the phones. Their automated phone line says to email with any questions or concerns. I have sent two emails with no response.
Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that. Did it ever arrive? I have noticed that everything is taking forever to ship right now. 🙁
