Sew-Easy Hot Pad Tutorial

So I did a new thing. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do, but I’ve been a little nervous to start. I tend to overthink things and I tend to talk myself out of things because I think I’m not properly equipped to do it, or I question whether or not I can be successful with it. Or I cringe at the thought of making videos of myself, but this week I decided to take the leap and finally do it: I started my YouTube channel!

So maybe I won’t be the next big YouTube star, ha ha. But I have been wanting to get sewing tutorials up for my students and for anyone else who needs a visual aid in creating! I’ve been promising my students a tutorial for hot pads, so that’s the first video I created! A big shout out to my awesome hubby for helping me to make these videos and setting up my YouTube station. I’m still figuring it out and I only have a couple tutorials up, but I really hope that all of you reading will subscribe to my channel and check back for more content! And I hope that I have the time to update and add new videos often!!

Today I am sharing my hot pad tutorial with you. It gives you step-by-step directions on how to sew a cute, pocketed hot pad. This is the first project that I work on with my students, and they make really great gifts for people! You can really just use scraps of fabric for this project. I included the measurements and materials in my pattern directions, listed below the video.

Materials Needed:

Check out the video!

Also, I promised my students I’d upload the pattern tutorial so if they wanted to print it out and add it to their files, they have that option. Sometimes it’s nice to have the directions written out in front of you. With me, you get the best of both worlds! 🙂

And here’s the finished product! Ta da!

I’m looking forward to sharing more tutorials with you! Let me know if there is anything in particular that you’d like to see me do. I have a lot of ideas buzzing around in my brain, including a full, online sewing 1 course that I’m really hoping to launch early next year!! It will be just like my sewing 1 course that I offer now, but online for those with busy schedules who’d rather do it in on their own time, or for those who live far who want to “take” my class. I have a lot of work to get done on that, but I hope it will be available for purchase within the next 6 months (or less!)

So what do you think? How did I do on my first video? I’d love to hear your feedback!

  1. My daughter wants me to make her a cover for her iced coffee from Starbucks with a long strap on it so she can carry it on her shoulder. Can you help me figure out how to do that? Like a water bottle cozy, only with the strap to free her hands to carry other things>

    1. Sorry I didn’t see this sooner! I would have to sit down and play around with patterns. I’m thinking you can make a pattern for the starbucks cup by wrapping paper around it and using that as a template (does that make sense?) And then adding a strap on top, like a purse.
