Easy Weekday Croffles

Have you ever had a croffle?? If your answer is no, you are not alone. I had never heard of them before last year. It took me nearly 42 years to discover this heavenly goodness! So much time wasted. Here’s my story.

Let’s rewind to when we dropped our daughter off at college in Hawaii last summer, we ventured out one morning for breakfast and came upon a food stand (in Waikiki) called “Kai Fresh”. They served fruit bowls and waffles and I was becoming slightly addicted to my morning fruit bowls on that trip, so I ordered a fruit bowl, while my husband ordered a waffle. He ordered a berry topped waffle with a side of their coconut syrup; nothing too special. Or, so we thought.

O.M.G.

Boy, were we wrong. This most definitely WAS a special waffle! It was a perfect combination of crispy and chewy; crispy on the outside, and warm and chewy on the inside. The coconut syrup put it over-the-top-delicious!!! Naturally, we went back the next morning for another waffle. This time, I ordered my own. I wasn’t messing around! They were hands down the best waffles I’d ever tasted!

For months, I thought about those waffles and wondered what made them so special. What made them taste so amazing? Whenever I come across a restaurant recipe that I fall in love with, I always search for a copycat recipe so I can replicate it at home. But this was just a small, individually owned food stand, so there was no way to find a recipe online. I made a pact with myself that when I would return to Hawaii in the spring that I would figure out the secret to these delicious waffles, even if I had to bribe them for the recipe (ha ha).

Fast forward to spring break: we had been talking about these waffles for the past several months to our kids, putting Kai Fresh as our first breakfast stop on our spring break Hawaii itinerary. I will admit that after how much I’d talked up this waffle, I was a little nervous that it wouldn’t live up to its hype.

Wrong again.

They were just as delicious as I’d remembered them and the kids agreed that they were pretty darn tasty. I sat there, determined to figure out the secret as I dissected my breakfast. My husband and daughter were sitting right beside me, helping me to pick it apart and solve the mystery. And then it hit me; this waffle was made from a croissant! As we pulled that waffle apart, I recognized the familiar texture and look as a croissant, but did they put a cooked croissant on the waffle maker? Or did they start from dough? Did they add any waffle batter?

After a little research, I discovered that croissant waffles are a real thing, not just made up at Kai Fresh. They are referred to as “croffles”. Who knew? I sure didn’t! I was super excited that I was solving the mystery and you better believe that we started experimenting as soon as we got home from Hawaii. Turns out, croffles are super easy to make. So easy that you probably don’t even need this recipe. But here are a few tips I’ve learned:

  1. If you buy a can of croissant dough, it’s best to use two croissants for one croffle. Using one made it kind of small, and we wanted a bigger piece.
  2. Coconut syrup really makes it! We found coconut syrup in several places in Hawaii, but it’s not so easy to find in stores here on the mainland. This is the exact coconut syrup that we bought from The Dole Plantation in Hawaii. It tastes just like the syrup served at Kai Fresh!
  3. Don’t cook for the full time that your waffle maker sets for regular waffles (more about this below).
  4. I’m willing to bet that homemade croissant dough would put this croffle over the top! But, I haven’t had time to experiment with that, so the canned dough will have to do for now.

Let’s get to the recipe!

Making croffles is even easier than making regular waffles. All you need is:

  • Can of croissant dough
  • A waffle maker (THIS is the one we have and we LOVE it!)
  • Fresh berries (optional)
  • Coconut syrup (optional but highly recommended!!!)

If you want to make homemade whipping cream, you will need:

  • Heavy whipping cream
  • Powdered sugar
  • Vanilla

Like I said, making croffles is super easy. First, get out your waffle maker and preheat it. My husband is the waffle maker in our house; our family loves a good waffle bar! He’s been wanting a double sided waffle maker for a long time, so the kids and I picked this one out for him for his birthday last year. We love it!! Each side makes four waffle triangles, so we get a lot made, lickety-split!

Open up your can of dough and roll out each dough strip into a croissant.

Place croissants in your waffle maker, either one in each half of the waffle maker, or two. We initially tried it with one, but decided we wanted bigger croffles, so we put two side-by-side and that was perfect!

Cook for 2-3 minutes, NOT the entire light up time for your regular waffles. They’ll brown up quickly, so keep a good eye on them!

Once they’re golden brown, take them out and top them with whatever you like! I can’t recommend the coconut syrup enough; it’s amazing!!! We like to top with berries and syrup, the Kai Fresh way. You can top it with whatever you like!

And if you’re like my kids, they love to top their waffles (and croffles) with just a dollop of whipped cream. Homemade is the best! (I’ve shared the recipe below).

Don’t these look heavenly? Let me know in the comments how you like them!
