Description

In this class, students will learn how to sew a knit maxi dress. [You can also take this class if you would like to reinforce your learning on knit tees or sew another knit t-shirt or tunic]. This is an intermediate level class (if you aren’t sure if you’re ready for this class, ask me) and it’s best if you have taken a beginner’s knit class with me before. We will be cutting out and constructing the dresses in this class. Please arrive on time (or a few minutes early) so that we can start right away. We will need the full amount of time!

It’s best for each person to purchase their fabric and pattern for this class. Half the fun of sewing your own wardrobe is choosing your fabric! You will want to choose a knit fabric (which means it stretches). If you aren’t sure whether or not you are choosing the right knit, you can reach out to me. Double brushed poly is my favorite knit (it’s as smooth as butter!) You can also choose: jersey, ponte roma, crepe knit, poly knit (to name a few). There should also be a “suggested fabrics” list on the pattern, to give you some more ideas.

Pattern:  I really like using Ellie & Mac patterns because they are so simple and easy to learn on. You can choose from her maxi dress patterns HERE. She has several patterns which would be great for this class. I would prefer to stick with one of the following:  Be Dreamy, Be Graceful Maxi, Reversible Dress, Going Home Sweater, Hipster Dress, Be Confident, Adult Breezy Dress. Most of these dress patterns are also available in kid’s sizes (make sure you are selecting the kids pattern, as they are sold separately).

There is a guide, when you purchase, on how to print out your pattern (it’s super easy!) as well as how to measure for sizing and how much fabric to buy. If you still need help figuring any of this out, please don’t hesitate to ask. When you print your pattern, you can select which size you want, which makes it very easy to follow! (All of this is explained in the directions). To save time, it would be great if you can have your pattern already printed and taped/glued together. Again, all of the instructions on how to do this are in the pattern when you purchase and download. If you are still confused, I would be happy to help you before class! (Just give me a call!) I don’t want you to stress about this 🙂 It’s good to learn how to do this so you’ll be able to do it again on your own!

To sew on knits, you do need a different machine needle, which you can purchase at Joann’s or here below. You will want either a jersey or ballpoint needle. I also recommend clips for knits, rather than pins, as it is MUCH easier and does not risk damaging knits like pins do.

*Don’t forget to prewash your fabric!!
