Happy October, friends!
October is my favorite month!! Partly because it’s my birth month, but also because it is the start of the holiday season. If you’ve missed all my other posts where I’ve gushed about how I feel about this time of year, I’ll sum it up for you again: I LOVE the holiday season!! I love the fall breeze in the air. I love the sights and the smells and the sounds, which bring back warm and fuzzy memories of years passed. I love eating yummy holidays foods, seeing the beautiful fall and winter decorations and I love seeing all the creative costumes that people come up with for Halloween.
Speaking of Halloween costumes, I’ve been wanting to share some of my favorite family costumes that we’ve done over the years. I have been sharing a few here and there on my Instagram page, but I thought I’d share some here as well. Hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoy looking back and reminiscing about them!
#1: The Incredible Family
This is probably one of my all-time favorite costumes that we’ve done. We had the perfect setup for The Incredible Family: my daughter was Violet, my middle son was Dash, my youngest was Baby Jack Jack and of course the hubby and I were Mr. and Mrs. Incredible. I didn’t spend hundreds of dollars on premade costumes; I put it all together myself! I copied the logo from a template online and traced it onto felt, then cut it out and glued it onto red shirts. I bought the leggings super cheap at a legging store in our mall. Yep, we used boxer briefs and black swimsuit bottoms for our under-roonies. The belts were made from yellow duct tape! I used adhesive Velcro on the backside for a closure. If you look closely you can see that we didn’t all have black boots and I wasn’t about to go out and buy them all, so we improvised with black socks and black tennis shoes/dress shoes. The masks were cut from felt and I hot glued elastic around on the inside. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy! It really was simple to do and it was a huge hit!
#2: The Addams Family
When my middle child was a little roly-poly baby, we thought he’d make the perfect Pugsly! The ideas started there and I ended up making my Morticia dress, Gomez’ suit and Wednesday’s dress. (Don’t mind our little photobombers in the back).
#3: Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum
A few years ago, we visited my brother’s family in Arizona for Halloween weekend. My sister-in-law and I put our thinking caps on and came up with this perfect BFF costume! We found the pencil skirts at Forever 21 for $4, the yellow t-shirts at Target for $5 and ball caps from the Dollar Tree! I glued on red satin ribbon for the suspenders and hot-glued the blue-sequin fabric on top of a cardboard bowtie (and then glued it on the shirt). It was really easy and cheap to make and the icing on the cake was when we went to a Halloween party at The Phoenix Zoo and found Wonderland!
#4: Cowboys and Indians
I hope I don’t get too much heat for this one. Nowadays it probably isn’t politically correct to dress as “Indians”. I completely respect and love the Native American culture. Hopefully you can take this as fun 😉 I found the pattern for the Native American costumes and ended up buying the boys’ costumes. I thought it was a fun costume theme.
#5: Batman and Robin
This picture doesn’t even need an explanation; it’s just a boy with his best sidekick! I totally didn’t make this costume but this is one of my favorite Halloween pictures ever.
#6: Tinkerbell and Wendy
Before I had boys, I had an adorable toddler and a beautiful niece (who was later adopted and became my daughter!) Aubrey loved Tinkerbell at the time, so I sewed her a Tinkerbell costume and made Maurina a Wendy dress to match. We should’ve made Jeff go as Peter Pan! 😉
#7: Pirates
You can never go wrong with a good Pirate costume. We’ve reused this idea a few times. When Pirates of the Caribbean hit the big screen, I transformed Jeff into Jack Sparrow by sewing him a costume. I made my own Pirate Wench costume to go along with it. You wouldn’t believe how many girls wanted to stop and take pictures with him at our church trunk-or-treat!
Fast forward a few years and we used the same pirate theme for these little pirate babies of ours. Actually, we did these costumes for Cody’s Pirate Birthday Party.
#8: The Phantom of the Opera
Aubrey went through a phase where she wanted to be in beautiful dresses all the time. I came across an old Halloween pattern I had for a masquerade-ish style dress and she fell in love with it. It was fun for her to go with me to pick out fabric. Little brother, of course, got to be The Phantom with a homemade, satin cape. We reused that cape a few years later for a vampire costume!
#9: The 80’s
Whenever I don’t know what to dress up as, I go back to the 80’s. It’s just so easy to do! I kept some of my favorite 80’s jewelry from my grandma’s jewelry box after she passed away. And let’s be real, I still have some of my own. Ha ha. My 30th birthday party was a flashback to the 80’s, and I whipped up a skirt and black lace shirt on my sewing machine. Wigs always make things a little more fun!
#10: The Goonies
Okay, this actually wasn’t a Halloween costume at all. Over the summer we went on an epic family vacation through Oregon, Washington, and Canada. Naturally, we had to visit Astoria because we are all the biggest Goonies fans ever. We were a little “extra” on that trip…so much so, that I think this deserves it’s very own post. Tune in next week to read all about our Goonies Adventure in Astoria!!
I have NO idea what we are dressing up as this year. I’m gonna have to browse through some ideas and figure it out soon! Only 20 days left until Halloween!
