DIY Spooky Halloween Cats

I love the holidays! And I love making crafts at the holidays. Every October, we have a “Super Saturday” craft day  at our church. There are usually several crafts to choose from and we each sign up for whatever we want to make. This year, our Super Saturday conflicted with an event that I had that same afternoon for The DEANA Foundation, but there were a couple cute crafts that caught my eye. They looked simple enough and I figured I could spare a couple of hours to feed my holiday craft addiction. The first craft was a Christmas craft, so I’ll share that one next month. Today I will share with you this super easy, super cute Halloween craft.

It took very little time to get this craft completed. Granted, the wood was already pre-cut for us, but it’s only a few cuts, so it shouldn’t be too hard to do yourself. You could probably complete this, start to finish, in half an hour…maybe a little longer depending on dry time for your paint.

MATERIALS:

  • 30″ piece of 2″x4″ wood, cut into 3 measurements: 12″, 10″ and 8″
  • black paint
  • paint brush
  • raffia
  • wiggly eyes
  • glue gun (with glue)
  • sandpaper

After cutting your 2″x 4″ into 3 pieces, draw diagonal lines across the tops of each piece to form triangular ears. Then, cut on that line with a saw. Sand your edges and the rest of the wood, if needed.

Paint 2 coats of black paint on your pieces, allowing the first layer to dry before applying the second.

Once your blocks are completely dried, sand along the edges to give it a worn look. You can make it look as worn as you like.

Now that the hard part is done, you just have finishing touches! Glue on the wiggly eyes and tie some raffia around the wood plank. Use as little or as much as you like. I trimmed my raffia pieces after they were tied because they were way too long. Maybe I should’ve tied them into a bow; that would look cute! I also put a little hot glue underneath the raffia to hold it in place.

Seriously, so simple! It’s a spooky-cute addition to my piano!
