Candy Cane Christmas Breakfast

For my entire life, we have had the same scrumptious breakfast every Christmas morning. It doesn’t really have a name, we just call it “Christmas Breakfast”. We only ever eat it on Christmas morning; it’s a special treat for a special day.

I’m not sure how my grandma came up with this, but she started this tradition when my mom was a kid. I think the story was that she got the idea from a magazine of some sort. Grandma always came up with the best recipes, and this was no exception. My mom carried on the tradition with her own kids and we now carry it on with our children. Here’s a cute picture of me, straight out of the 80’s, with Christmas breakfast all over my face at my grandma’s house.

And here is a picture of my daughter around the same age as I was in my picture. She had much better hair than I did. Ha ha. Oh my goodness, how I miss those chubby little cheeks!!

My Uncle has adopted this tradition as well, although in his family they do it as a dessert on Christmas Eve rather than Christmas breakfast. And that makes sense because this is a very SWEET breakfast!

I think that’s why it has always been so appealing; it starts with a layer of ice cream! Ice cream for breakfast?? Only on Christmas! There is cereal, milk and strawberries; those are breakfast foods, right??

People are always intrigued when they hear descriptions or see pictures of our Christmas breakfast. It sounds a little strange, but it is the most amazing combination of yummy goodness! It’s pretty simple; all you do is layer ice cream, frosted flakes cereal, and strawberries in a tall glass, finishing it off with milk and a peppermint candy cane for that perfect holiday flavor. Tell that doesn’t look amazing!

I provided a printable recipe for this yummy goodness, but you don’t really need it. It’s very straightforward, as you can see in the video. There’s no real measurement you have to go by. Some of us prefer more cereal in ours and some prefer slightly more ice cream or less milk. It’s very customizable. The candy cane is what makes it Christmas breakfast though. Give your glass a good stir with the candy cane to incorporate that pepperminty flavor into it!

We always use tall glasses (which works better for the layers) and long spoons. Having special glasses and spoons also made it feel special! We only brought out those glasses and spoons on Christmas!

So, what do you think? Give it a try and let me know how you like it in the comments!!
