How To Sew A Soup Bowl Cozy

Today I am sharing a super easy, super cute sewing project with you all. I needed a beginner’s project for one of my classes and we’ve already done hot pads. I’ve seen this idea floating around and I picked up fabric to make some soup bowl cozies months ago, but never got around to making them. This was the perfect opportunity to get my act together and get them sewn up! They didn’t take long to make, and they were fun to do. My favorite part is mixing together different fabrics!

I’ve made both a still picture tutorial as well as a video. I love having options! Here’s the video, and if you scroll down you can find the pictures. Hope you have some fun with this one!

What you need:

*Note: If you plan to put the cozy in the microwave, then all batting and fabric must be 100% cotton. Any synthetic fabrics will be flammable.

Directions

1. Cut out your 10” squares of fabric and batting.

2. Place each of your cotton squares on top of each of your batting squares, right side facing up. Pin in place and draw an “x” on top of the cotton square, from corner to corner. I don’t know why you can’t see my “x” on this fabric; I promise I drew it on. Sew on top of the “x”.

3. Fold each square in half. Along the fold line, measure 2” down and mark it with a dot. Then, measure 1” from the fold line across the top; mark it with a dot. With a ruler, line up your dots and draw a line across from one dot to the other. Sew across the lines. Cut corner close to stitching line. Do this on both squares.

4. Fold your square in half the opposite direction, and repeat step 3 on the new fold line. Repeat with 2nd square.

5. Turn one square right side out. Place one square inside the other, right sides together. Pin in place and sew around the perimeter of the square, leaving an opening to turn fabric.

6. Clip your corners and flip the cozy through the opening. Iron your seams to be on the fold line and stitch your opening shut.

And that’s it! Your bowl cozy is done!

These would be a fun thing for young entreprenuers to make and sell, and they also make cute gifts! I had one friend tell me that they make especially great gifts for chemo patients, as their extremities tend to be very sensitive to heat and cold. I loved that idea and plan to use it in the future <3

  1. Love this video it seems so easy. I have made them in the past, but most videos show you have to sew the top all the way around at the end. I noticed you didn’t. Do they stay in place by not doing that? I really didn’t like sewing across the top because it was so thick and I would struggle. What do you think?

    1. Hi! I know a lot of people top stitch. Top stitching just helps to keep the seam allowance sewn down flatter, but it’s not really necessary (it’s really bulky to try and top stitch!). Mine have held up fine without the top stitch. Hope that helps! 🙂
